Last Stop In Cincy... Hudepohl Brewery

10 April 2012 - 04:06 PM

Founded in 1885, Hudepohl thrived in Cincinnati, a city which at the time was home to a strong beer making tradition. The company survived Prohibition by offering non-alcoholic products and the beer was even selected by the U.S. War Department to be distributed as morale booster for American troops fighting in the Pacific Theatre. In 1946 construction was completed on a new manufacturing facility in the city's Queensgate neighborhood. Throughout the next few decades Hudepohl would compete for dominance over other local breweries in the area. As their local competitors began to close up shop due to the rise of national brands like Budwesier, Hudepohl expanded into the specialty beer market, but not the national market hoping to continue dominance over the Queen City.

Faced by ever increasing market competition from the larger national brands, Hudepohl celebrated it's centennial anniversary in 1985 by looking for a buyer. In 1986 the company was purchased by local competitor Schoenling Brewing Company. Schoenling continued to sell the Hudepohl brand and operate the Queensgate plant. In 1987 all production of Hudepohl and Schoenling brands were moved to Schenling's Central Parkway plant, leaving the Queensgate plant and it's smokestack bearing the Hudepohl name abandoned.

Aeromotive Plant

This plant has some major arson damage, large sections of the roof is missing, has alot of grafitti, but has some cool interior shots. They produced engines then later parts for rockets.

Power Plant

27 March 2012 - 05:44 PM

This was a former Power & Light for the city, it was built in 1907 and also housed a factory that was attatched to it. Plans in 2009 were to convert it to lofts, commercial and retail - however those plans were put on halt.

There is not alot here since they cleared it out back in 2009/2010 - but is pretty cool structure wise.

Jefferson School

27 March 2012 - 03:30 PM

A really neat 1928 school that was abandoned as the school built a more modern school half block from this site - they apparently left all of the school materials - books, lockers, tables etc at this site and had no intention of moving them to the new location.

It appears as if they are trying to at least keep the school standing, it looked like their trying to "contain" the asbestos section of the school. I don't know what the future is for this old school.

Behind The Scenes Of A Dying-Mall

23 February 2012 - 03:35 PM

I visited this dying mall last Sunday and was very impressed - though it is sad to see any business in a dying state, this mall has been dead since it broke ground in Northern Ohio - the main reason it is dying is it opened with far too expensive stores at the time and is too big. It has changed owners continuously, and only has 19 stores including anchors. Plans are in the next 2-5 years to convert the former Biggs location to a ice rink, agriculture museum, water park and Candlewood Suites. This by far is the best place I've ever explored - Its in its prestine condition and definitely deserves a 10/10.

I have been busy lately, so I will post a few pics, but the rest are on the site's gallery
