I don't know much about it, but heres what wikipedia said:

Cooper Upper Elementary School - Formerly Cooper Elementary School & Whittier Junior High School. The older school, located across from the present location, opened in 1966 & closed in 1991 due do the growing concern by the city of the school's location over a landfill. The older building was demolished in the Fall of 2005. The older building was also a Michigan Historical Landmark. The LPS District is looking into the vacant property, which is currently part of a redeveloping project with Westland, located south of Livonia.

But from what I recall, the hallways and classrooms looked like a tornado had run through them. Probably the result of ransacking or reckless vandalism, it kind of looked like someone had taken an orderly elementary school, turned it upside down, shaken it a few times, and set it back. Little desks, books, computers, shelves, and paper were strewn everywhere. Very chaotic and dark.
Also, by that time the school had caught on fire several times, possibly due to accidents, but more likely due to arson and vandalism. So almost every horizontal surface was coated in a thick, greasy soot.
The gymnasium was particularly surreal. It seems the district was using the building for storage, and they had parked hundreds of cafeteria tables in there. It was dense, like a full parking lot, all propped up and in their ordered rows. Naturally I tried to take a picture of it, but it was not to be.
