The Illinois board has a decent amount of posts, I'm not sure anyone else from it is really active though. Basically, the reason I'm starting this thread is because I heard on the radio today that a demolition crew was given a permit to destroy Dixie Square mall, which is definitely on my bucket list lol. However, it's in Harvey which is a pretty crappy town so I'm curious if anyone is anywhere near the area and would be interested in trying to schedule a visit before it's gone forever. Any takers?

If i had a car, and a few days to go down to Illinois, i would do it, but, as it sits, I'm pretty booked for the rest of the month, and the start of next month, though that doesn't matter, as i don't have a vehicle

Well, thanks for the reply anyway lol. Get a car though! There's some stuff in Wisconsin near you we could go to like mid-cities mall and the mirro building.

I went to Dixie last August - it is really gutted with not alot to see - though the fact it was used in the Blues Brothers film made it worthwhile - as for the permit - there have been several so called permits sent out - though with funding at stake, it may sit for another couple of years - honestly, I don't see why Harvey wants it demo'd - the town is a disgrace and will take thousands of dollars to fix up, but time will tell - maybe it will become a ghost town.

Bummer - I just read Fox Chicago's site and I think its gone for good - I was wanting to go back since I was using a zoom lens at the time - but now its only memories - I will contact a friend who lives North of Harvey to confirm it.

I heard the demolition was supposed to start Wednesday. Didn't figure I'd get to go before it happened anyway, oh well. Thanks for the pictures.
I'm going to leave this thread open to further replies though because there's other cool shit in Illinois as well
I would also love to go to Gary if anyone is around there.

Yeah, I've been wanting to hit the brach's factory - though my visit back in August was really short - I was visiting a friend who moved there not to long ago. Hope to make it back someday.

^yeah, I heard about Brachs. I've wanted to go there as well. I've also seen pictures from a couple hospitals in Chicago. And even with Dixie mall gone, there's still the Wyman Gordon Power Plant in Harvey, that could be cool.

Well Illinois sounds like a fun trip, If I get funds ahead for another long trip I may head out. I'd like to see a few places there and would like to get back to Louisville and see more than last time

At first I saw "Illinois Meet Up" and got really excited, only to realize you were up north haha.
Until you have courage to lose sight of the shore, you'll not know the terror of being forever lost at sea.

You are around 60 miles from Cairo. Let's go!
Now you can tear a building down, but you can't erase a memory
These houses may look all run down, but they have a value you can't see

I havent been south of Kankakee in a long long time, but wouldnt mind poking around that area. I've been trying to get permission to photo the state hospital in Jacksonville, it's on the short list of closures. There are a couple of other state hospitals that arent abandoned I thought about checking on along with a few old county asylums.
Dixie Square mall isnt that great to see anymore, mother nature pretty much demolished it already! Brachs is still good exploring shape though. The Jay's plant might be on the list soon too. As for Gary, there's still some good locations but recently more then a few have been sealed off and/or under watchful eyes unfortunately!
