Fairfield Hills State Hospital, which is more commonly known as Fairfield Hills, was built in 1931 in Newtown, Connecticut in response to the overcrowding in Connecticut’s other two mental hospitals. Fairfield Hills opened on June 1, 1933 and received its first patients from Middletown’s Connecticut Valley Hospital.

On December 8, 1995, Fairfield Hills closed and the patients were transferred to Connecticut Valley Hospital. Due to the supposedly cruel treatment of patients, which included shock therapy, lobotomies, and several other methods of treatment, which caused the death of many patients, the campus and its buildings are supposedly haunted. As a result, it was a common target for ghost hunters, vandals, and other people with less than good intentions, which was greatly problematic due to the presence of lead and asbestos in the buildings. Due to the high amount of trespassers, the security on the campus is extremely high and it is virtually impossible to get into the buildings and/or the remaining tunnels that once connected the various buildings.

In 2004, the Town of Newtown bought the Fairfield Hills campus from the state. Since then, the majority of the tunnels have been filled in and a few of the buildings (including the morgue) have been knocked down. Watertown Hall, which was across the street from the main campus, was knocked down so the Reed Intermediate School (Newtown’s 5th and 6th grade school) and another building was knocked down to build the Newtown Youth Academy (NYA), which is a sports complex. Bridgeport Hall is currently the location of Newtown’s municipal offices. The movie Sleepers was filmed on the campus (I’ll see that movie someday), and the campus was also featured in an episode of the MTV show Fear, although it’s true identity was kept secret.

Enjoy the pictures!

1. I'm pretty sure that this is where the morgue used to be.

2. The other side of this building is visible from the road that the main entrance to the campus is on.

Nice!
Now you can tear a building down, but you can't erase a memory
These houses may look all run down, but they have a value you can't see

Thanks!

I'd love to be able to get inside the buildings to look around, but until someone invents an article of clothing that makes a person invisible, I'm not going to try to enter any of them. I would have loved to have a chance to see either the morgue, the tunnels, or both, but I'll have to be content with the 2 times that I've been in them legally, even though the 1st time was when I was little. I'll try to get some more pictures soon, and hopefully I'll be able to get some of the duplexes and the houses at the back/side of the campus.

That's awesome, too bad you can't get in. There's a hospital not too far away from me that's completely sealed off as well. Such a shame lol.
