As one year ends, a new one begins. 2011 is a fresh start, anew beginning and hopefully a better year than 2010!

Before I get started I just wanted to say thank you all for being such a great community, for documenting and providing photos of locations that many of us would not normally get the opportunity to see, and hopefully through photos and information, preserving them long after they are gone for future generations to enjoy.

To start things off, I would like to relay a warning to all of you. When we go out exploring, there are a number of dangers that could befall us. Cops, vagrants, chemicals, unstable flooring/roofing, broken glass, rusty metal… it seems unlikely that it ever would, but it truly could happen to any one of us.

On December 30th, my friend's (who is one hell of an explorer himself) stepson fell 50 feet down an elevator shaft while he was out exploring. He survived the fall but was in the hospital for a few days and had to have his face and legs surgically put back together. He's since been released from the hospital and will be fine in time, but it is a wake-up call tome and many explorers how dangerous our trespassing really is.

All I ask is that all of you be very careful when you're out exploring. Always carry a flash light or two, NEVER go alone and always let someone who is not with you know where you're at and when you expect to be back.

On a less depressing note, you're going to be seeing some new things around here in the next year. I'm currently preparing a contest to see who can place the most The Walls Have Teeth stickers in different buildings. I have yet to decide a on a prize, would anyone be interested in this? I'm trying to work out how the stickers will be delivered. I'll probably offer the template to print them and a link to purchase the sticker paper or send out a few sheets to people who ask for them. I'm not sure yet.

Also, would anyone be interested sub forums for really popular locations? Some examples of this might be Essex County Hospital/Overbrook Asylum in New Jersey or Michigan Central Station in Detroit. I'm open to all suggestions.

So thanks for your time, I look forward to hearing any feedback or input you all may have.

2011 Greetings!

- Dan

P.S. - I'm in the lead for the sticker race, and yes, that is on a ceiling :P

Dan the man, a contest sounds exciting! But those of us in AZ have hardly anywhere to slap them. So I'll just sit by and watch what you guys come up with.

I'm glad to hear that your friend's stepson will be alright. These menaces and dangers are something that us urbex must watch out for very seriously, and be vigilant about. Everyone take care around abandonments. Please. I know we all are, but when getting the perfect shot, look around you first. Make sure you see nothing that may harm you. Also, don't venture into an abandonment hungry, tired, sick, or preoccupied. There should be no distractions.

The subforum idea is a good one, I think. I read all posts so it won't matter so much to me, but may increase our traffic.

To everyone, a safe and happy 2011!

Ahh Chain! Maybe I'll have a runner up prize for most interesting location that the stickers are put in? You could slap one on a cactus or something :P

I don't know the full story of how it happened, but I think it was simply an accident. I mean, shit happens, even to the most seasoned explorers. He has been sent home and I haven't heard how hes doing since.

Psst.. Chain, check the staff board for my "sticker race topic"

Yes, shit does happen, but I think we all need to have eyes in the backs of our heads.

Dan,

Sorry to hear about your friend's stepson. Exploring is a dangerous adventure and to have him survive such a 50 ft fall is really lucky. As for the Sticker Idea, I love it, but for those who don't own a printer is there going to be a way for you to ship them to us?
