I've been shooting with a DSLR for about a year, (Canon xsi) and now I'm looking to up grade from the software that came with the camera to something more adanced. I've read endless reveiws, and they just left me more confused than ever. What I'm looking for is something that I can convert from the raw format, has great editing ease and capabilities, and I'd also like to jump on the HDR band wagon. I don't have enough cash for cs3 of 4, and the real users hate elements 8 but the magazines love it???? I heard that paint shop has a shitty raw conversion but the HDR is great. I heard the Photomatix Pro is a bad ass HDR, but can it edit and convert? Any advice would be much appreciated! Thanks!

For ease of use HDR, go with Photomatix Pro. There is a free version, but it leaves a water mark. Yes, it converts RAW to JPG, but doesn't allow for anything outside of HDR really.

I've been using the Free and Open Source program called GIMP. It has plugins to handle raw images and process HDR. GIMP is similar to photoshop in that it is a bit-mapped image editor.
You can get some HDR-like effects using the GIMP color/curves menu. Send me an email or chat me up if you are interested.
Good luck and keep on taking pictures!
