I spent a considerable amount of time here last weekend, and am going back this upcoming weekend for more. My intent was to meet the "manager," Jeremiah the Amish Hobo (not kidding), and talk to him for a while about his trying to start a "Hobo University" in the building for a class project of mine. He is an ultra nice man (I'll include a pic at the bottom), and let my friend and I wonder the building at our leisure, even showing us how to get on the roof (which we didn't do...WAY too visible.) We met several of his homeless friends, and I felt an almost surreal sense of security in what is considered to be a dangerous part of the city.

Just goes to show that if you treat the homeless with respect, they'll treat you the same. If any of you ever make it to St. Louis, I HIGHLY recommend meeting Jeremiah. He's an awesome guy.

Within the next month or so, I'll have assembled a sound slide presentation about Jeremiah and this building.

Enough rambling...to the pics! (If you're a fan of hall shots, you'll love this set)

These aren't of that building, but are of a few other locations around the area.

And being in St. Louis, a couple obligatory shots of the Gateway Arch:

(Not sure why those look so weird and grainy with the light...they don't look like that at all in their uncompressed form)

P.S. Jeremiah, to who I owe this set:

Wowie!!!

Unbelievable. In number 22 is that the sun setting behind the building?

I'm dying to know the story of Jeremiah.

Great set!

Thanks!

Yes, the sun was setting behind the building in #22. It was taken sometime around 5:30-6:30.

The building in #27 is still active: it's the Union Electric Light, Power & Gas Co. building.

If all goes well, I'll have a story on Jeremiah coming up in the next month or so. I'll be sure and post it here.

For whatever it's worth, I shot all these using a Canon Rebel XSi going back and forth between a Canon 17-40mm f/2.8 L-Series and Canon 55-250mm f/4.5 EFS lens.

Awesome work! Especially the sun setting. When I first looked at it I thought..."wait, there's no power there." Then I took a closer look and thought it was the sun.

Yes, please tell us the story of Jeremiah.

Awesome set! I'd love to explore the many abandoned buildings in St. Louis, but I live like 45 mins. away and I don't drive. :(
