Gps Coordinates

Howdy,

I stumbled across this site in my search for abandoned items across Canada. Chris the webmaster (moderator?) suggested I post my request for GPS coordinates to the forum.

I fly all over Canada during the summer looking for abandoned items from the air. This summer I'll be flying about 5,500 miles from Winnipeg to Watson Lake to Churchill to Montreal to Digby, NS....and back. Whew!
In the coming years, I will go back to some of the sites via float plane for further exploring.

Since everyone here seems to like abandoned stuff; here are the coordinates of a couple items I've discovered. They are two abandoned ships in Hudson Bay. Cut and paste into Google Earth and you'll see the ships!!
Ship 1: N057 5 3.910,	W092 29 43.740
Ship 2: N058 46 8.950, W093 53 21.180

So my request: Do any of the members have GPS coordinates of any noteworthy items?
Tilas; I saw your note about WWII stuff from the AlCan construction. THOSE items would be awesome. I'm an amateur history buff on the AlCan construction and HBC forts (factories).

I've reading & viewing the AnotF Cassiar pages (I now have the coords for Cassiar and will over fly this year). Really cool images!!! One item I noticed is that there is a landing strip SE of town. Anybody been up to the airfield? Do you know its condition?

BTW - I assume the AnotF members have found this site about Cassiar: http://www.cassiar.ca/home/intro.htm
It is filled with 500+ images of the town from the 50s to present day.

Take care,
I call this one "The Slanted House" because everything was on a slant in this area! The roof of the house is really strangely built, the building looks to be on a slant, the garage next to it is almost fallen right over, and the outhouse outside is slanted too! This place was one of the "newer" ones we looked through, because we found catalogs from Dec 2005 in there. However, the door was wide open when we walked up, so we just went in and looked around.

This cabin was one of the most interesting in the entire trip I think. It's like the owners just got up and left, and never looked back. It's creepy in a way, but this one was really interesting to explore. The back door was closed and locked, but the front door was unlocked. At first looking through the window we thought someone might have been living here, but after a closer look we realized it was actually abandoned so we went inside.
If you walk up beside this house, then keep climbing the hill to the left, you will reach the Cabin on the Hill.

I liked this place, the view was amazing, and there was a supply of running water here. My dad was actually interested in finding out who owns this place, he was wanting to buy it to clean it up and make a summer home out of it. There was a sign with a phone number on it, and dad did call the number, which sent him to another company lol. He eventually tracked down the company on the sign, but they honestly couldn't remember anything about the property because they said it's been so long. It's probably been given back to the government or something. Oh well.
Patrolled: Yes. You need to enter the old town site of Cassiar through the main gates, which is currently being used by the BC government for various projects. Honestly though, other then the abandoned church, there's really not much to see in here, so you're not missing much. All other buildings are currenlty being used by the BC Government.
This road runs beside the church. It leads to a dead end.

Small buildings on the far side are being used by the government, we saw people going in and out of them.

I believe this was the old hotel of Cassiar, now being used as a bunkhouse for the workers. We did not go in.

Imagine houses here. This used to be a block of homes.

Keep imagining pretty homes everywhere. You can see the remains of the sidewalk.

Remains of the sidewalk that ran beside the homes where people once lived.

More sidewalk and you can kind of see the road, and where the house once stood.

Near the top of the picture, that was a road.

When they tore down Cassiar, they even tore up all the side streets so people couldn't drive down them. Well, I supposed you could if you really wanted to, but we weren't going to try it in our van lol. I'm not really sure why they would go through THAT much trouble to rip up even the streets, there's nothing down there that we can tell. :\

Now this has to be the strangest thing we saw that entire trip. We.... are not really sure WHAT this thing is. We couldn't figure it out, but if anyone has any ideas... let me know! This was near a big yard with all sorts of junk in it, and an old cabin, but the cabin was boarded and locked up, so we didn't bother with it.

Give up? It's an old fashion chicken plucker. You put the dead chicken inside, and turn it on, and the rubber knobbies spin and pull the feathers off the chicken. Kinda creepy, isn't it?

This one is pretty cool, This house was set down on what I'll call stilts, (cause I can't remember the proper word lol), up on a hill way behind the garage. My dad said a friend of his once tried to buy this little house, but the deal fell through, so, here it sits. I'm going to mark this one as a ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK, because since it IS supported up high, I wouldn't trust what's holding it for much longer. We could feel it creak as we walked in there, so we made our exploration very short. Also, the ladder is very rickety, and would probably break if used more.

From this angle it looks like a normal house.

Until you see it's being supported high off the ground. I'd say oh.... 5 feet at least.

Up the ladder to the house, the house number is still there. It originally was in the former town site of Cassiar. (The townsite has since been destroyed)
Another little cabin up in Cassiar, this one was a little boring, it's pretty empty. One thing to note is it 's actually sinking into the ground it was built on. This was a problem with a lot of cabins built in Cassiar, they were built directly on the ground, no form of foundation or anything to support them, so over the years, they're slowly settling into the ground, and becoming very tilted.

Outside, you can see it's sunk down into the ground quite a bit. All the ground in this area was very soft and wet.

Beside another building, I don't have pictures of the 2nd, but the 2nd was converted into a chicken coop it looked like, it was really smelly and full of hay.

Living room. No, that's not an optical illusion, the cabin was actually that un-level.

Kitchen area, an interesting thing is those cabinets were metal, not wood.

Very un-level floor.

Bathroom area, yes, that's ice buildup in the corner, and yes, these were taking in May. It's such high country that there was still ice and snow everywhere. I think that's insulation all over the floor....

This little cabin is hidden high up on a hill, and it's almost impossible to see from the road. We found it when looking at the house on the hill, and there was a trail leading up and away. We decided to follow it and came up to this one!

This is the old garage/gas station that was in Cassiar. It's long since abandoned. The front of the building is boarded and locked up. However- the back wall of the shop has collapsed, so you can get in through there, or the door nearby that's gone.

ENTER AT YOUR OWN RISK.

We went snooping inside the garage but we could hear the walls and roof creaking, so we stepped very lightly and quietly. Most likely, another year or two of snowfall will do the building in.

Please note: it was very dark inside the building, all of the interior photos were lit up by the flash of my camera only. We forgot to bring a flashlight. ; Our eyes adjusted enough so we could see a tiny bit, but not much. The photos were what really showed us what was inside.
